Herning is a bottleneck for new public forests
On Wednesday, November 10, Growing Trees Network issued a press release calling on the municipalities to contribute land for public forests.
The benefits of afforestation are many. Among other things, it contributes to CO2 reduction, creates habitats for wildlife and other fauna, and at the same time we get even more places to go for walks and enjoy nature, which contributes to public health. Growing Trees Network collaborates with the Danish Nature Agency and primarily plants on top of water reservoirs, so that, as the public forests are run ecologically, fewer pesticides and other toxins are ensured in our drinking water.
If we all in Herning Municipality donated a single tree to a public forest that the municipality made land available for, we could together remove over 100 tons of CO2 per year with a forest the size of approx. 30 football fields and at the same time help to ensure good groundwater for future generations.
Herning is, measured by area, Denmark’s third largest municipality. Therefore, there must also be land that is possible to establish public forest on. There have previously been projects with afforestation in the municipality. This should be worked on again!
