The climate election in 2019 led to Denmark adopting a historic climate agreement, with a reduction of CO2 emissions of 70% by 2030. The municipal election on November 16 is approaching and here the climate and nature are also on the agenda.

All Herning municipality’s citizens received a supplement to the folk newspaper last Wednesday, “Green Herning” - a supplement with a lot of good intentions and activities. So is there action behind the words? We believe there is room for improvement and would like to contribute to a comprehensive plan!

A wish that arises is more discounts with wild planting and roundabouts that are other than green grass or small bushes. Could you do as in Hjørring where belts have been made with insect-friendly plants and roundabouts have been replanted so that there is also some wild nature here. You could for example start with the median on Dronningens boulevard.

When talking about a Green Herning, thoughts turn to our small parks and facilities. Here you could save on mowing the lawn and let more wild flowers have space. In recent years, our green areas have become smaller with the exception of the new stamp that has appeared on the corner of Vestergade and Fredensgade - not exactly a revolution in the green transition, but better than more new buildings.

We are also looking at the urban renewal that is expected at the Hospital Grounds. In time, more homes will appear here and with them new Herning residents. Maybe they would also like to have nature a little closer even though they have chosen the city center. There will be planting on the roofs for the benefit of biodiversity, maybe there will also be room for more than a stamp where nature and citizens can get air, among the new homes?

“We can only do it if we do it together” - writes Teknik og miljø, but could Herning municipality take the green lead?

“… And come on Herning”; quote Lea Wermelin. If the municipality stands out as a good example, it is easier to be the citizen who follows along.
