The Ministry of Culture’s money for new books does not solve the reading crisis. Books without proper libraries are like a delicious meal without plates - difficult to enjoy. More books are of little use without someone to guide the children. As chairman of the school board at Brændgårdskolen, I see how a well-functioning school library makes a positive difference. Here, a teacher is assigned to the library for a few hours, and in the classes there is a focus on reading motivation, including through play. But unfortunately, not all schools are so fortunate. Therefore, it is crucial to restore the closed school libraries.

Experts and experience show that “books do not jump off the shelves by themselves”. They must be presented and communicated in a way that arouses children’s appetite. Children need qualified adults as “waiters” in the world of literature - adults who convey a love of reading and help them find the right “dishes” on the “menu”. This requires staffing and learning environments - a “dining table” where literature can be enjoyed.

Since the school reform in 2014, many school libraries have been closed, which has contributed to declining reading motivation and failing reading skills. A report shows that up to 25 percent of 4th grade pupils do not read at the appropriate age level. It’s like starving a quarter of a year group.

Therefore, there is a need for a nationwide solution: School libraries must return!

The Minister of Culture has himself expressed a desire for reinstatement. Now is the time for action. Words are not enough; funds must be allocated for living reading environments with qualified adults - so that children get both the food and the plates.

I urge Herning Municipality and the politicians in Christiansborg to prioritize school libraries. It is an investment in children’s future - an investment in ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to “sit down at the table” and experience the joys of literature.
